What Are Some Signs That My Chimney Needs Maintenance?

In an ideal world, every fireplace and chimney owner would be booking annual chimney inspections to ensure their system is in top shape before the start of every burn season. That said, sometimes issues can pop up in between inspections, especially if your system is seeing more use than normal.

Being aware of what can go wrong – and when you should call in a professional ASAP – is important. Keep an open eye for the following issues, and contact our experts right away if such an issue arises:

    • Visible cracks or damage. One of the most obvious signs that your chimney needs maintenance is visible damage to the exterior. This can include cracks in the masonry, crumbling mortar, or missing brickwork. All of these things can quickly lead to water damage and more, so getting us in to look things over right away is a must.
    • Efflorescence or any other staining/discoloration. Efflorescence is the white, chalky residue that can appear on the exterior of your chimney – and it’s a sign that moisture is making its way into the bricks or masonry. This (as well as any staining you notice on your chimney) should warrant a call to a pro.
    • Rust on the damper, firebox, chimney cap, flashing, etc. If you notice rust forming on your damper, in your firebox, or on any metal components of your chimney system, it’s a clear sign that moisture is entering the chimney. Additionally, rust can be an indication of other water damage, which might require more extensive repairs.
    • Excessive creosote buildup within the flue. Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood, and it can accumulate on the interior walls of your chimney. While some creosote buildup is normal, excessive accumulation is a serious fire hazard. If you notice thick, black, or tar-like deposits in your chimney, it’s time to schedule a professional cleaning.
    • Smoke backdrafting or any changes in operation/efficiency. Smoke should never enter back into your home when you use the fireplace. If it does, it could mean you have a blockage (due to bird’s nest, leaves, or excessive creosote buildup), or it could indicate a damaged flue. Proper ventilation is critical for the safe operation of your fireplace, so call us in at the first sign of smoke in your space.
    • Deterioration of the masonry or chimney crown. The chimney crown, which sits at the top of your chimney, plays a vital role in protecting the chimney from the elements. If either the crown or any surrounding masonry is cracked or damaged, water can penetrate the chimney, leading to more extensive damage. Inspecting and repairing the chimney is the next best course of action.
    • Signs of leaks or water damage around the fireplace. Water stains on the walls or ceiling around your fireplace could indicate that your chimney is leaking. This is often due to damaged flashing or cracks in the chimney itself. Water is your chimney’s biggest foe, so addressing water issues as soon as they arise is crucial.
    • Any indication that animals are present. Scurrying noises in your chimney, bad odors near the fireplace, an uptick in pests and bugs in your home…there are lots of signs that animals are somewhere on your property that they shouldn’t be. If you’re worried a critter has taken up residence in your chimney flue, have an expert remove them, then call on us to clear out any blockages and address needed repairs.
    • Strange odors coming from the fireplace. We mentioned that animals can stink things up, but there are other odors to be wary of too. A musty, damp, or unpleasant odor coming from your fireplace could be a sign of mold, mildew, or moisture buildup in the chimney, and a campfire-like smell could indicate excess creosote buildup. Regardless of the cause, strange odors are a red flag.
    • Drafting or ventilation problems. If you’re experiencing trouble with drafts – either too much air coming in or not enough air circulating out – there may be an issue with your chimney’s airflow. This could be caused by a blockage, an improperly sized flue, or some other ventilation issue. Proper airflow is critical to the efficient operation of your fireplace, so call us in to correct any issues.
